Is Pearl the 30th Wedding Anniversary Gift?
Short answerYes. GIA names pearl as the gem of the 30th wedding anniversary, and of the 3rd. Anniversary lists have changed over time: Emily Post's 1922 Etiquette named only the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th and 75th anniversaries, from paper to diamond, with no pearl at all. For a gift, the type of pearl sets much of the look and the price, and the quality factors set the rest.
- Pearl is the gem of the third and thirtieth anniversaries.1
- Emily Post's 1922 list named paper for the 1st anniversary, wood for the 5th, tin for the 10th, crystal for the 15th, china for the 20th, silver for the 25th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 75th.2
- Pearl is also a June birthstone.3
- Pearls have long been associated with purity, humility and innocence, and were traditionally given as a wedding gift.3
- GIA calls freshwater cultured pearls the most affordable type, and says Akoya cost more than freshwater pearls of similar size and quality.4
- When other factors are equal, larger pearls are rarer and more valuable than smaller pearls of the same type.5
Yes. GIA names pearl as the gem of the third and thirtieth anniversaries.1
How anniversary lists have changed#
Anniversary lists aren’t fixed, and they have changed. In her 1922 Etiquette, Emily Post listed just eight: paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th, tin for the 10th, crystal for the 15th, china for the 20th, silver for the 25th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 75th.2 Pearl wasn’t on it. We couldn’t find a reliable source for when pearl was added for the thirtieth.
Post also commented on the gifts themselves. She wrote that paper, wooden and tin presents were seldom anything but jokes, that crystal was the earliest likely to be taken seriously, and that silver was always serious.2
What pearls mean#
Pearls have long been associated with purity, humility and innocence, and were traditionally given as a wedding gift.3 Pearl is also a June birthstone.3 The page pearl symbolism covers the older meanings.
Choosing anniversary pearls#
The type sets much of the look and the price. Among cultured pearls, GIA calls freshwater pearls the most affordable type, and says Akoya cost more than freshwater pearls of similar size and quality.4 The table compares the main types in the Learn About Pearls dataset.
| Feature | Akoya cultured pearl | Freshwater cultured pearl | South Sea cultured pearl | Tahitian cultured pearl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural colors | white and cream4 6 7 8 | white, cream, pink, peach, orange, lavender and purple4 8 9 | white, silver, cream, champagne and golden8 10 11 12 13 | gray, greenish gray, black and brown6 8 11 |
| Typical size | 6–8 mm6 7 8 14 15 | 3–15 mm6 8 | 9–16 mm6 8 15 | 8–14 mm6 8 15 16 |
| Relative price | Generally more expensive than freshwater cultured pearls of similar size and quality (GIA)4 | The most affordable pearl type (GIA)4 | Not recorded | Not recorded |
Within a type, seven factors set the value: size, shape, color, luster, surface quality, nacre quality and matching. When the other factors are equal, larger pearls are rarer and more valuable.5 The pages pearl size guide, necklace lengths and what pearls are worth help with the choice.
For natural pearls and other valuable pieces, a laboratory report confirms what you are buying, including whether the pearls are natural or cultured and any detectable treatments.4
