# Privacy Policy

Learn About Pearls is published by Unique Pearl, a pearl jeweler based in Great Neck, New York. This page explains what the site collects and why.

## The short version

- Learn About Pearls sets no cookies and shows no ads.
- Pages load nothing from other companies’ servers. Fonts, search and the tools all come from this site.
- The only personal information the site receives is what you choose to send through its two forms.

## Analytics

Learn About Pearls doesn’t use any analytics service at present. If that changes, this paragraph will name the service and say what it collects.

## Questions and corrections you send

The [question form](https://learnaboutpearls.com/ask/) asks for your question, and lets you add some context, a first name or initials, a region and an email address. The “Suggest a correction” form at the end of each page asks what’s wrong and records which page you sent it from, and lets you add an email address. Everything except the question or the correction itself is optional.

We use what you send to answer your question or check the correction:

- Your email address is used only to reply to you, and it’s never published.
- If you agree, we may publish your question, reworded, with an answer. A first name or initials and a region appear with it only if you gave them.
- Each message is saved in a database run by our service providers, and it’s emailed to the editors.
- We keep messages so the editors can answer them, and as the record behind any page or correction made from them.

To stop the forms from being flooded, the site counts messages by a scrambled version (a salted hash) of the network address each one came from. That record is kept apart from your message, and records more than a day old are deleted when the next message arrives.

## Settings your browser remembers

A few settings are kept in your browser’s own storage, not in cookies, and they never leave your device:

- your choice of light or dark mode;
- the units in the necklace length guide;
- the scale you set in the pearl size visualizer;
- the columns you hide in the pearl type comparison.

## Hosting

Learn About Pearls is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel receives each request, including your network address and browser details, to deliver pages and to protect the site from abuse. Vercel’s [privacy policy](https://vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy) explains how it handles that information.

## Children

Learn About Pearls is a general reference and isn’t directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect information from them.

## Seeing, correcting or deleting a message

You can ask us to show you, correct or delete a message you sent. Use the [contact page](https://learnaboutpearls.com/contact/), and tell us roughly when you sent it and what it said.
