# Editorial Policy

Draft for review. The reviewer’s name and role will be added before launch.

## Who publishes Learn About Pearls

Learn About Pearls is published by Unique Pearl, a pearl jeweler based in Great Neck, New York. Unique Pearl pays for the site.

## What Learn About Pearls covers and how topics are chosen

Learn About Pearls chooses topics by what people ask about pearls most often, and answers each question as plainly as the evidence allows. Education comes first:

- No company pays to appear on Learn About Pearls.
- Learn About Pearls never ranks, reviews or compares sellers, including its publisher.
- Learn About Pearls publishes no product reviews, star ratings or testimonials.
- There are no sales banners, exit offers or other selling devices.

## Sources Learn About Pearls relies on

Every number and date on Learn About Pearls is cited. The preferred sources are gem laboratories and gemological institutions (such as GIA and its journal _Gems & Gemology_, SSEF, Gübelin and DANAT), the CIBJO Pearl Book, peer-reviewed research with DOIs, government and FAO data, the US Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides, museum collections, and reputable books cited with page numbers. Retail websites and blogs are never primary sources, and that includes the publisher’s.

Each page lists its sources as numbered references, and every source has an archived copy so citations keep working. Where good sources disagree, the page gives the range and says who says what. Legends are labeled as legends.

## How pages are written and checked

- Drafts may be AI-assisted. AI tools help with research and drafting, and AI output is never published as is.
- Every claim is checked against its cited source. Each page has a fact-check record listing every claim, its source and where in the source it appears. Anything that can’t be verified is removed.
- A named person reviews every page before it is published: \[reviewer’s name and role]. Each page shows who reviewed it and when.
- Each page includes original material: first-hand notes from the trade (quoted word for word, with names and dates), photographs taken for the site, tables built from the site’s dataset, diagrams drawn for the site, or an interactive tool built for the site. The exceptions are section overviews, which sum up a section and link to its pages, and policy pages like this one.
- Pages move from draft to fact-checked to reviewed to published, and only published pages appear on the site.

## Photos and images

Photos on Learn About Pearls come from open collections, such as Wikimedia Commons and museums’ open-access programs, under licenses that allow reuse. Each caption credits the photo’s creator, license and source, and says only what the photo’s own record says or what the page cites. Photos taken by or for jewelers and pearl sellers aren’t used. No AI-generated image is ever presented as a photo of a real pearl. Diagrams are drawn for the site, and each has a text version.

## Dates and updates

The “last updated” date on a page changes only when the content changes meaningfully, never because the site was rebuilt. Market and production figures are reviewed every three months, and every page at least once a year. Each page lists its significant revisions.

## Corrections

When Learn About Pearls gets something wrong, the page is fixed and the correction is listed on the [corrections page](https://learnaboutpearls.com/corrections/) with the date and what changed. Every page ends with a form for suggesting a correction.

## Reader questions

Readers can send questions through the [question form](https://learnaboutpearls.com/ask/). Pages that answer reader questions use real messages only, reworded, and show a first name and region only if the reader gave them and agreed to publication. The original message is kept on file.

## Conflicts of interest

Unique Pearl sells pearl jewelry, so the reference and the shop are kept clearly separate. Links to the shop appear only where buying is the natural next step: buying guides, wearing guides, quality examples and tool results. A page carries no more than two shop links, never in its short answer or key facts, and every shop link says in the same sentence that Unique Pearl publishes this site. Pages about science, farming, [natural pearls](https://learnaboutpearls.com/glossary/#natural-pearl), history, rules and names, and the glossary have no shop links. The publisher’s prices are never used as market benchmarks.

## Language Learn About Pearls uses

Learn About Pearls follows the US Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides and CIBJO nomenclature, and always says whether a pearl is natural, cultured or imitation. Learn About Pearls makes no health or medical claims, and calls nothing “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” without reporting the evidence and its limits.
